WHISTLER - The first annual Olympic Pole Dancing competition yesterday gathered a surprisingly huge viewing audience.
Following men's figure skating last night and before curling, few expected the first annual Pole Dancing Olympic event to be a smash success, but with a 30 Nielson share after last night's debut, few skeptics are left.
"We were going to cancel the whole thing at first, given the massive 1.3 share we'd gotten for competitive snowmobiling," said Sandy Sawchuck, NBC's 2010 Olympics media coordinator. "But somebody decided to stick with it, so we buried it at 11:30 p.m. in the states. Who knew?"
Media pundits, like Boss Russ McDermond of CNN's "Top-Spin," were quick to disparage the event as "mindless pandering... void of any actual Olympic merit," but later added a conclusive "so what?" "Let's face it, pole dancing is hard to do, as anyone who's watched women do it for hours on end can attest. It deserves to be watched, rated, and studied very, very closely. I'm sorry, what was I saying?" said McDermond, live on his show.
Representing the United States, Shari Delicious (left) from Las Vegas, Nevada, finished the night with a solid $299 in $1 bills and Olympic Gold. Hard on her high-heels was Czechoslovakian native Sheri Love, who finished with the Silver, and last, but not least Sherri "D" from Moscow took home $99 and the Bronze.
It is expected that tonight's prime-time recap of the competition will similarly devastate ABC and CBS' lineups.
