LONDON-In an attempt to be more socially relevant, Dr. Who is slated to tackle the London Riots in its own way.
In "Burning Down The House," a spilled-tea induced Tardis malfunction lands the Doctor in present day London, smack in the middle of looting rioters. After Amy, Rory and River are severely beaten, the Tardis is destroyed and it's up to the Doctor to find a way to quell the riots and get back his beloved Tardis before it's too late.
"We scrapped several other stories to do this one in the current series," said Neil Hayes, one of the shows producers. "In fact, the actors were severely beaten on their way into the studio one day, so the story has the added benefit of being at least partially inspired from reality."
The actors, in fact, were quite happy to do something that didn't involve wearing uncomfortable, silly costumes covered in fake slime. "If Doctor Who cannot serve as a medium for social and political comment, what are we doing here?" commented Matt Smith, who plays the eponymous "Doctor." "Oh wait, yeah, right," Smith continued, "Comic-Con merchandising! Right, so, never mind."
The episode is currently in production.
